Opera in three acts.Music by Giuseppe Verdi, Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave It is based on La dame aux camélias (1852), a play adapted from the novel by Alexandre Dumas fils.La Traviata epitomizes, along with Puccini’s La Boehme, Italian verismo opera. The work by Giuseppe Verdi, directed by Robert Carsen, is carried by the power of the choirs and the tragic sensitivity of the feelings of the soloists. Robert Carsen has created a post-modern, playful, off-beat staging, where the “over-play" of the flamboyant choir is contrasted with the elegant dryness of the soloists, whose solitude is amplified by the immense and often bleak sets. This Traviata (created at the Fénice on March 6 1853) is performed by Patrizia Ciofi, who has established herself in a short time as the most promising soprano of her generation, and who is a sublime and deeply moving Violeta. Another striking figure in this production is the tenor Roberto de Biasio, with his amazing vocal range, brilliantly mastering the tricky passages of his final aria, Sento avvampar nell’anima. The choreography is by Robert Carsen’s faithful collaborator, Philippe Giraudeau.
At one of her brilliant supper parties, the beautiful but frail demi-mondaine, Violetta Valéry, meets the well-born Alfredo Germont, and for love of him abandons her feverish life of pleasure. Alfredo’s father intrudes on their idyllic existence in the country and, although realizing her sincerity, persists in his demand that Violetta renounce Alfredo. Violetta determines to make the sacrifice and departs, leaving only a note for Alfredo...
