Music by Giuseppe Verdi; Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave after "Le pasteur, ou L’Évangile et le foyer" by Émile Souvestre and Eugène Bourgeois
Betrayal and forgiveness: these are the themes of one of Verdi’s operas that suffered most from censorship. Stiffelio is a Protestant minister, a man of the Church who, discovering his wife’s infidelity, finds the strength to go against conventions and forgive the adulteress during the Sunday sermon, resulting in one of Verdi’s most beautiful compositions. Years later, in the light of the opera’s scarce success, Verdi reworked the score, changing the title to Aroldo and moving the setting from Protestant Germany at the beginning of the nineteenth century to Scotland in the Middle Ages. Thanks to its innovative character, today Stiffelio has finally joined the ranks of masterpieces.
