French lyric drama in four acts. Werther was first performed on 1892 with the composer himself conducting. The libretto is based on Goethe’s famous epistolary novel Sorrows of Werther. It’s a young man who is so dissappointed in love that he kills himself. The episodes are linked together in a style reminiscent of genre painting as if it were a chapter in a picture book. Performed in french, Massenet created a french “fin de siècle” style opera, characterised by its delicacy, elegance and sensibility. In this production of quality, the Opéra national de Paris offer to us in the title roles Rolando Villazón and Susan Graham.
