Opera-bouffe in three acts by Jacques Offenbach / Libretto by Henry Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy / Lyrics revised by Stefano Mazzonis di Pralafera. In La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein, the authors of this comic opera mock the war on France's threshold. The charge against the powers, the army and the nobility is pointed but, to satisfy censorship, it is skilfully camouflaged by the grotesque costumes of an imaginary duchy and by some musical buffoonery of sparkling gaiety. And yet, at the time, no-one was fooled! Only Offenbach could pull off the trick of being adulated by those by whom he was so cynically inspired! New production by Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège.
In her superb ancestral domain, now a renowned hotel and restaurant, the Grand-Duchess of Gérolstein directs a kitchen brigade with the same efficacy shown by her ancestors when they directed their military regiments in wartime! Wishing to secure even greater renown for her restaurant, she enters it into one of television's biggest culinary contests: "La Guerre des Chefs"! Things seem to be going well, with her team about to enter the final round, when... the Grand-Duchess, carried away by her love of men, is tempted by the charms of her adoring followers – triggering off a cascade of developments coupled with a real revolution within her hostelry!
