Manon Lescaut received thirty standing ovations when Giacomo Puccini’s work was first performed in Turin in 1893. The Monnaie is banking on the exceptional partnership between the conductor Carlo Rizzi and a new arrival, the Polish director, Mariusz Trelinski, for this long awaited return to the Brussels stage (the opera was last performed there 37 years ago) as well as an all-star cast with Eva-Maria Westbroek, in the role of Manon, Brandon Jovanovich in the role of Knight Des Grieux and Aris Argiris as Lescaut. Puccini paints a black and realistic picture of a doomed passion. Although initially the young Manon allows herself to be captivated by the wealth of a powerful man, she cannot fight against her love for the penniless knight Des Grieux. The jilted lover condemns her to deportation to Louisiana, where she dies of exhaustion, after being followed by Des Grieux.
