Farsa in two acts (1831) – Libretto by Gaetano Donizetti. New production of the Teatro alla Scala. Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro alla Scala. In association with the Performing arts Teatro alla Scala Accademia. Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali was inspired by two comedies written by Antonio Simone Sografi between 1794 and 1816. It follows the theatrical tradition of Goldoni, Gozzi and Metastasio, and subjects the bad habits of the operatic world to biting and sardonic criticism. The opera pokes fun at the "rights, either real or presumed, that each opera artist assumes to possess and which leads them to not liking particular operas or dances, irritating the public, ruining impresarios and ridiculing virtuosos". Premiered in Naples in 1827, this dramma giocoso will be directed for the first time on the Scala stage by Italian actor, director and writer, Antonio Albanese, a true master of wit and satire.
A regional operatic troupe is rehearsing a new work — Romulus and Ersilia — and faces numerous obstacles. The prima donna repeatedly makes impossible demands. The Russian tenor cannot master either the lyrics or melodies. In the midst of much quarrelling, various singers threaten to walk out. The situation turns direr with the arrival of Mamma Agatha (baritone role), the mother of one of the female performers. She insists on a solo for her daughter and even issues detailed demands on the musical arrangement of the aria.
