Concert L’Oiseau de feu, 40' Petrouchka, 35' Le Sacre du printemps, 35'
From 1910 onwards, thanks to Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, Paris celebrated Stravinsky. The first of these was The Firebird, premiered in June 1910 at the Châtelet, followed the next year by Petrouchka, before the Rite of Spring in the spring of 1913 for the opening of the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. This trilogy illustrates Stravinsky's incredible musical evolution in just three seasons, in terms of his mastery of orchestral colours and his subtle exploration of rhythm. The composer's writing reached its apogee with The Rite of Spring, whose irrepressible power of rhythm and unheard-of combinations of timbres have made this work, beyond its scandal on the night of its premiere, one of the foundations of musical modernity in the 20th century. Over the last few years, François-Xavier Roth and his musicians have worked extensively on the sources of these three major scores in order to restore the 'original sound'. This evening, they invite us to enjoy this fascinating historical and sensory experience, in which L'oiseau de feu (The Firebird) is scented with memories of Rimsky-Korsakov and the early French influences of Ravel and Debussy, Petrouchka exults in its 'tawny' colour and Le Sacre triumphs with its irrepressible power.
