Valery Gergiev is combining performances of Dmitri Shostakovich's first and last symphonies in one concert. The composer was only 19 when his Symphony n°1 was performed in Leningrad. Far from being academic, this work already has a true personality, especially in its treatment of rhythm. The Fifteenth Symphony which was first performed almost fifty years later, in Moscow, innovates through its borrowing from other works in the repertoire, especially the Opening of William Tell by Rossini. Valery Gergiev is commencing a group of performances of all Dmitri Shostakovich's symphonies and concerts. In each programme, Valery Gergiev has chosen to combine the scores of youth with the works of his maturity. The chance once again to savour the wealth of the tones of the Mariinsky Orchestra from St Petersburg.
