Sylvie Guillem is one dancer who never stops moving. At just 19, she was named “etoile” (lead ballerina) of the Paris Opera by Rudolf Nureyev himself. Throughout a career spanning more than two decades, she has become unique in the world of dance – maintaining a fierce independence and an insatiable need for new challenges. In recent years, she’s taken on contemporary dance, acting and even singing. Our cameras spend two years behind the scenes with Guillem as she prepares for a brand new dance performance. We follow the project every step of the way, right down to costume fittings with designer Alexander McQueen in his London atelier. Intercut with this revealing story, we feature our own exclusive footage of Guillem dancing works by Russell Maliphant and Akram Khan, plus a July 2008 tribute to the late Maurice Béjart performed with the Tokyo Ballet in Versailles.
