When grief takes away all words, all that remains is dance. To express the loss of a loved one in a different way, but also to move beyond sadness, to remember and perhaps then to celebrate life, its miracle. Angelin Preljocaj's new creation, Requiem(s), gives flesh and body to the complex interweaving of emotions triggered by grief. This time, Angelin Preljocaj has drawn on his own history - the recent deaths of several of his close friends - with arias from the Mozart and Ligeti requiems, music by Bach and Messiaen, and the addictive electric notes of the American metal band System of a Down in mind. Thanks to the nineteen performers, dance, like a procession of bodies, becomes ritual and celebration. The troupe also expresses the power of the collective in the face of the pain of mourning. The play of light and materials - the costumes - create enveloping chiaroscuro effects that evoke the rituals and legends associated with death, as well as its cruellest masks. A leading figure on the contemporary stage since founding his company in 1984, Angelin Preljocaj has regularly presented his creations at the Théâtre de Caen, alternating between radical projects and narrative ballets such as Snow White and Swan Lake.
