"Between 1905 and 1907 Winsor McCay , the precursor of cartoons, invented a gigantic fairly tale set against a backdrop of New York wich contained all the symbols of fairy tales already known. The reader can thus choose the tale which suits him from this weatlth of images. My choice was already made, I wanted to meet SLEEPING BEAUTY and McCAY's version was exactly what I wanted. To make this come true, I imagined my ballet with a King who smoke cigars, a Queen who waters her flowers, a quick change Witch with a thousand tricks in her bag, bright blue palaces which changed into a concrete jungle, a dart-throwing Prince himself struck with love for the Beauty, the fairy paradise with wide, sweeping staircase and raining ostrich feathers. I imagined all this in an architecture already art deco. And so it was, I had found my beauty and all I had to do was borrow the revolving door from Sacha GUITRY's "Story of a Cheat" and the ironic smile, which made children laugh, from the famous clown Charlie RIVEL. Then I could create this ballet with all the fantastic performers I know and to whom I dedicate this new Sleeping Beauty." Roland PETIT
