After many performances in French at the Opéra-Comique and a performance given in German by the Vienna Opera in 1928, the work was first given in its original language at the Palais Garnier on 7 April 1973, inaugurating Rolf Liebermann first season. The work was conducted by Sir Georg Solti in a production by Giorgio Strehler (scenery and costumes by Ezio Frigerio), with Gundula Janowitz as the Countess, Mirella Freni as Susanna, Tom Krause as the Count, José Van Dam as Figaro and Frederica von Stade as Cherubino. This production, which was a triumphant success, has been revived many times with various casts. It was first staged at the Opéra Bastille in December 1990. The sets for this revival come from La Scala, Milan (those of the original production were destroyed after the last performances in 2003) along with a number of the original costumes.
