The story unfolds in a small Russian village. Following the death of the old servant Thekla , young Parasha smuggles her fiance, Vassili a hussar, into the family home, disguised as a kitchen maid named Mavra. Parasha’s mother pleased with the new domestic is taken in, until she surprises the servant thinking himself alone, preparing to shave. Fainting from the surprise the mother is revived only to see the hussar flee throught the window, much to the despair of Parasha, crying out the name of Vassili... A seemingly modest miniature work, Mavra is a little letter of love sent in 1922, by two Paris-based Russian emigres Boris Kochno and Igor Stravinsky, to their beloved motherand, Russia.
Inspired by Pushkin’s poem «the Little House in Kolomna » and « Balagan » popular street theater the plot is simple. They both describe the discreet charm of life in the modest quarters of the city. The plot twists with a love intrigue with disguises travesties popular refrains evoking image of samovars and Russian dolls.
