OUVERTURE DE DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG, WWV 96 Music by Richard Wagner (1813-1883) VIER LETZTE LIEDER, OP. 150, TRV 296 Music by Richard Strauss (1864-1949) SYMPHONIE NO 9 EN RÉ MINEUR, WAB 10 Music by Anton Bruckner (1824-1896)
Tarmo Peltokoski appears for the second time with one of France's most prestigious orchestras, that of the Capitole de Toulouse, and with a fascinating programme. He begins in comedy mode, with the overture that Wagner wrote for The Mastersingers of Nuremberg, one of his most performed symphonic works, and then presents two authentic artistic testaments. With Richard Strauss's Four Last Songs, sung by the young soprano Elsa Dreisig, it is not only the musical career of a formidable composer that comes to an end, but also an entire genre, that of the Romantic Lieder, and an era, that of Romanticism itself. With Bruckner's Ninth, which will bring the festival to a close, one of the great symphonic cycles of the entire Romantic world comes to an end.
