The Palazzetto Bru Zane in Venice is continuing its efforts to promote the (re)discovery and dissemination of the French musical heritage of the 19th century with an exceptional four-hand concert featuring two young virtuoso pianists: Guillaume Bellom and Ismael Margain. The piano four-hands is more than a musical genre in the 19th century: it is an act of sociability as well as a mean of propaganda and teaching. For publishers, it was also a lucrative and profitable business. This practice resulted in the most diverse formulas: arrangements of operas or symphonic pieces, children's pieces, ball music or ambitious sonatas. From the learned scores of Boëly, Onslow and Gouvy to the suites of Fauré and Debussy, a whole century is written in the course of a repertoire in which orchestral transcription sometimes takes on the appearance of a virtuoso “tour de force”.
