The ballet Jewels is a triptych, each of whose facets sparkle like a precious gem. Physical perfection and colours blend in with the musics distilled by Gabriel Fauré, Igor Stravinsky and Piotr Ilyitch Tchaikovsky. The three parts Emeralds / Rubies / Diamonds are transpositions of the choreogra- phic styles of three countries where Balanchine lived and worked : The first, Emerald, evokes France, the cradle of the romantic school of dance ; the second, Rubies, represents America and is a subtle tribute to the showgirls of musical comedy ; the third, Diamonds, suggests the opulence and splendor of Saint Petersburg’s imperial ballet and the classical heritage bequethed by Marius Petipa. The sets and costumes for this new production by the Opéra national de Paris have been designed by the French couturier Christian Lacroix.
Created in 1967 for the New York City Ballet. Paris Opera Ballet and Orchestra.
