Artistic Information DESCRIPTION The show performed in Aix-en-Provence in 2010, and shared with two other great European festivals – Holland and Athens – brings together William Christie and Trisha Brown, two great American artists who know each other well but have not yet collaborated. They have chosen to present Pygmalion, a jewel of the French Baroque, which Les Arts Florissants recorded back in 1992 and have dreamed of bringing to the stage one day. Pygmalion will be preceded, in the first part of the evening, by a new production inspired by several of the most beautiful pages from Hippolyte et Aricie. This latter piece is the culmination of a work in progress based on Rameau’s opera which the choreographer began in 2008 and which had its first performance at BAM in New York last April. The show to be performed in Aix takes its inspiration from that staging while going much further in its musical exploration and artistic intentions. This production leads us to a new vision of Rameau’s output through the combination of William Christie – longstanding devotee of this composer’s music and always eager to demonstrate its modernity – and the singular talents of Trisha Brown, the radical choreographer who views the classical repertoire as a partner in conversation and never as an obligatory ingredient.
In conjunction with four top soloists they bring an exciting new vision of this high point in French baroque music. This is a new programme featuring the dance opera Pygmalion by the 18th century French composer Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764). It’s the first collaboration between the ballet company of legendary New York choreographer Trisha Brown and the orchestra and choir of William Christie’s Les Arts Florissants. The programme opens with fragments of Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie, followed by Pygmalion, the story of a sculptor who falls in love with his own ivory creation and begs the goddess Venus to bring her to life.
