Music by Antonio Vivaldi (Magnificat). Our perception of bodies is rooted in Christian imagery, which has marked Western art and our representations of the flesh. This shared culture is the starting point of the two pieces by Angelin Preljocaj, exploring the theme of incarnation. Created in 1984, Compagnie d’Angelin Preljocaj has been based since 1996 in the Cité du Livre in Aix-en- Provence, and numbers 24 dancers. Resolutely contemporary, and focussed on creativity, Angelin Preljocaj is one of today’s European choreographers enjoying
Annonciation brings conception on-stage: the sensual virgin encounters the androgynous and fascinating Archangel Gabriel, who informs Mary that she is, miraculously, carrying the Messiah in her womb. First we hear laughing children, and then the choirs sing slowly. The bodies approach one another, know one another and then submit to one another, in surprise and pain, in confusion and amazement. Because this dialogue is a fertilisation: birth can follow only from union.
