Ballet in one act, libretto by Boris Kochno, Music by Serguei Prokofiev, Choreography by George Balanchine. Boris Kochno drew inspiration from the Gospel According to Saint Luke to create the libretto of the Prodigal Son. Aiming for simplicity and clarity he omitted certains parts in particular the story of the elder son and introduced the character of the Siren, the courtisan to highlight the dramatic aspects of the work.
Composed of three scenes (The son’s Departure /In a Far off Land / The return), the ballet recounts the misadventures of this son, anxious to free himself from his family and discover the world. Accompanied by his two comrades the Prodigal Son takes part in a feast of friends. There he meets the bewitching Siren and strange companions who invite him to drink in order to strip him of everything and flee with is fortune .Humilited , naked penniless, the Prodigal Son finally drags himself to his father’s home to beg for pardon.
